The visit of the mission team, which the people here had hoped and prayed for over the past ten years, has finally taken place at our mission site. Just having the team step foot on this land again was a miraculous event, but the past week was filled with grace that far exceeded this miracle.
Local church members and the Disciples Church team from the U.S. came together to conduct VBS, a worship festival, and a youth retreat. It felt like witnessing a glimpse of heaven as people of different languages, cultures, and backgrounds united in respect and care for one another.
An unexpected event occurred during the youth retreat. During worship, some students began to manifest, and fear quickly spread among others, causing many to cry and tremble. Although I had experienced some spiritual events here before, this was the first time so many students showed signs of spiritual warfare. Thankfully, under Pastor Rennan's guidance, the church members and the mission team prayed for the students and engaged in spiritual warfare. After several hours of prayer, the situation was somewhat resolved.
Evil spirits were tormenting the students through their past pain and wounds. Among the attendees was a student who had attempted suicide just three days before the retreat, and several others were deeply gripped by spirits of death and fear. One student even asked for her charm bracelet, associated with witchcraft, to be cut off, declaring that she no longer wanted to return to the realm of darkness.
For most of the mission team, local church members, and attending students, this was their first experience with such a spiritual event. Through this incident, everyone came to realize the undeniable existence of the spiritual world, and some even accepted Jesus Christ on the spot.
Upon returning to Recife last January, the prayer topic that resonated in my heart was "revival." While there were various ministry ideas, I felt led to focus on prayer and worship for revival this year. Humanly speaking, I doubted whether revival was possible given the local circumstances, but as I prayed and contemplated this summer's ministry, I became convinced that God intended to pour out His grace. However, I was not entirely comfortable when spiritual phenomena arose during the retreat. I felt a reluctance to confront the spiritual realm in such a direct way and honestly preferred a more calm and dignified revival. But if this is the method God has chosen, then I believe it is the best way. Even before the event, I sensed that for the people here, their spirits needed to be opened before they could fully receive the Word.
After a week of rest and reorganization, another youth retreat will be held at a different school. A team centered around São Paulo will join the ministry, and I am eager to see how God will work this time.
I ask for your prayers for the revival of this land. May the spirits of darkness, which exploit wounds and pain to destroy lives, retreat, and may souls come to Jesus Christ, the Lord of hope, love, and joy. I pray that hearts once trapped in darkness, unable to find rest, will discover true freedom and peace in the truth.
Thank you for partnering with us in prayer from unseen places. I will send updates again soon.
Sincerely,
Ji Hye Kim
